WHO GETS REMEMBERED?

Books, Archives and the Global Diaspora

Thursday 2 October · 6–8pm
Gillian Jason Gallery, London
Panel begins at 6:45pm

As an extension of our current exhibition "A New Home, Still Ours: ACT II / The Front Room", join us at Gillian Jason Gallery for an evening of conversation exploring memory, archives and the ways diasporic histories are preserved, passed down and remembered.

Who gets remembered? Who gets to write the archive? And what happens to the stories, objects and histories that sit outside of official records?

From books and family collections to personal archives, inherited objects and oral histories, the things we choose to keep can become powerful ways of holding onto identity, place and belonging. For communities shaped by migration and diaspora, these forms of preservation can carry stories across generations, sometimes documenting histories that have been overlooked, displaced or left out of the traditional archive.

For this conversation, we’ll be joined by Jamilah E. Toni of over breakfast, Nubia Assata of readinroom and Holly Rollins of Rolstudio, we will explore the relationship between books, archives, design and the global diaspora, and the different ways we create, preserve and pass on memory.

The panel will begin at 6:45pm, with doors opening from 6pm. Drinks will be served following the conversation.

We look forward to welcoming you for an evening of discussion, reflection and exchange.
